Dr. Brian R. Smith, a retired General Dynamics Land Systems
professional, is a pioneering researcher in injury tolerance limits
from battlefield threats like mine blasts and improvised explosive
devices (IEDs). His groundbreaking work has shaped combat vehicle
design for General Dynamics and our armed forces. Dr. Smith, the first
African American to earn a biomedical engineering Ph.D. from Wayne
State University, is also an esteemed community leader. He serves as
president and CEO of the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum, leads youth
programs for the Detroit Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc., and actively
pilots and maintains aircraft for the museum. Recognized for his civic
contributions, he teaches STEM subjects at Wayne County Community
College, and with his passion for aviation, he has flown over 1300
Young Eagles and organized various aviation programs. Dr. Smith is a
dedicated advocate and lecturer on the Tuskegee Airmen’s legacy.
